For many lawmakers, the cost of public service stretches far beyond congressional wages into real, appreciable terms mortgages, college tuition and the cost of raising a family. For lawmakers who arent independently wealthy, the financial draw of the private sector can be a potent lure, and the value of their years of access and legislative experience can often fetch a hefty price tag in industry groups and private firms.
